Black Horse, Amberley

Let us know your thoughts by leaving a score

Run by Debbie and Paul Sugden this location is one of three in their stable which includes the Village Inn and the Britannia both located in Nailsworth. To get to this venue take the road from the commons rather than the one from Culver Hill which is very narrow. On approach you will find a small triangle of grass around which there is limited parking and it is often better to park back towards the main road and walk to the venue as the pub has no car park and it is not polite to block the local thoroughfares.

When you do arrive, you enter through a gate into the rear (East) garden where you will find a good number of bench table combos for alfresco drinking and dining, to the left of the pub is the outside toilet block and down the right side of the pub access to the West facing terraced garden via a paved area. It is on this paved area you will find the smoking shelter.

Entering the door, you can go left into the restaurant or right to the bar area and conservatory. The Restaurant seats around 25 and has a wood burner at the far end flanked by naked Cotswold stone walls for a cosy feel on colder nights. The rest of the walls are plastered and painted white. Surprisingly there is a little snug area with comfy sofas and a window view to the right of the fireplace.

Should you choose the bar area it is no less cosy also sporting a larger raised wood burner, with this area opening up into the conservatory which has commanding views. Cotswold stone dominates in this area. Should you book a table for a meal here the conservatory tables go first.

The venue is perched on the edge of the common looking West with a terraced garden that takes in a broad vista including spectacular sunsets when nature allows. During Covid this area has been equipped with some pods allowing outside use even if the weather is a little inclement

One wonders if the pub name the Black Horse may be related to the steed ridden by Tom Long the notorious highwayman that gives his name to Tom Longs post a short distance away.
