Built in 1874 this Shepherd Neame pub overlooks Chislehurst Common and St Nicolas parish church. It is one of only a handful of Shepherd Neame pubs that have guest rooms available (7). Very popular on a sunny days with many people sitting outside. Parking is on street and it can be very busy at times. Many events are held in the pub. eg Jazz, open mic nights. It is also the home to several local community groups.

Re-opened in Spring 2023 following an extensive renovation and going on to win a "Highly Commended" award on 19th June 2024 in the Refurbishment category of CAMRA's Pub Design Awards.

Breakfast is served 8 am to 10.30 am every day.

Historic Interest

Built in 1874, this replaced a former inn dating from 1832 on nearby Crown Lane and was erected on ground taken from the common at a yearly rent of "two fat pullets". Overlooking the common towards St Nicholas' church, this was once popular for festivities as well as cockfighting, which took place in the Cockpit until this was abolished in 1834, followed by stick fighting until this was abolished in 1862 along with the annual Whitsun Fair. The inn is surrounded by former gravel pits which were excavated for road building use. The Metropolitan Commons Supplemental Act 1888 subsequently saved the common for public use. The path at the back of the inn marks the end of the former racecourse, which was used every Whitsuntide 1851-1860.
