Beer Festival

St. Albans Beer & Cider Festival is the ultimate local event for beer and cider fans. Not only are we the original Hertfordshire festival but we're the biggest too, with hundreds of UK cask ales, intriguing craft keg offerings, our famous dedicated international bar, and a discerning selection of ciders and perries. Add to that a diverse range of delicious street food and a spectacular entertainment line-up, and it's a festival you really don't want to miss.

We'll be back at the Alban Arena from Wednesday 25th to Saturday 28th September 2024. For more information and to get your tickets, see stalbansbf.org.uk

PUB HERITAGE TOUR (3.30pm start) plus general festival admission

Pub heritage expert Paul Ainsworth returns to this year's Festival to lead a brand new Pub Heritage Tour. Starting at 3.30pm from the Arena, Paul will lead you on a trail of historic drinking establishments in the city, explaining their fascinating history and how they have changed over the years. This will be a new route, so ideal both for people who enjoyed Paul's tour last year and newcomers. As well as giving an insight into local pub history, Paul will also reflect on his experience as a national pub heritage guru, having authored several books - including his latest, East of England Real Heritage Pubs. After the tour, we'll take you back to the Alban Arena to enjoy the final day of the Festival - your admission is included in the ticket price. Thornbridge Union Beer Tasting Event (session 1: 6pm start)

Hosted by Thornbridge Brewery's head brewer Rob Lovatt and renowned beer writer and expert Roger Protz, this not-to-be-missed event is a chance to learn about the Burton Union and its place in brewing history - before getting a guided tasting of four Thornbridge beers, two of which have been brewed using the set. When brewing giant Carlsberg Marston's announced, at the start of this year, that they were retiring their historic Burton Union system, Thornbridge stepped in. They negotiated to obtain a section of it, and have now installed it at their site in Bakewell, Derbyshire. You'll hear the story of how Thornbridge rescued a piece of brewing history and are now producing beers on a Union set, narrowly avoiding the entire process being consigned to the history books and drinkers never being able to sample beer produced in this unique way. There will also be the chance to chat and ask questions of both Rob and Roger about their significant, but very different, experiences of the brewing industry. Included in the price of your ticket is general Festival admission and a souvenir glass, so after the event has concluded you can explore and enjoy the rest of the Festival.

Expert Beer Tasting Session with Miles Jenner & Roger Protz (7pm start)

As part of this year's Festival, we're staging a very special tutored tasting session, hosted jointly by Harvey's Brewery's head brewer and joint managing director Miles Jenner, and world-renowned beer writer Roger Protz. Starting at 7pm on the opening Wednesday of the festival, you'll be given a guided tasting through four very special Harvey's ales spanning a range of styles. As well as enjoying generous samples of each beer (included in the ticket price), you'll get to hear the stories behind the beers and the iconic Sussex brewery where they are produced. Head brewer at Harvey's since 1986, Miles has an incredible history in brewing and some fascinating tales to tell. Meanwhile Roger, who has written dozens of books about beer and for many years edited the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, will also offer his expert take on the characteristics of the beers and the origins and history of the styles. Both Miles and Roger will also take questions about their long careers and experience. This is a rare opportunity, and ticket numbers are strictly limited. The ticket package includes this guided beer tasting session, as well as general festival admission and a souvenir glass so you can then enjoy the rest of the festival once the session has concluded.

BEER & CHEESE MATCHING EVENT (12.30pm start) plus general festival admission

Cheese guru James Grant and internationally renowned beer writer Des de Moor are teaming up at this year's festival to offer a special session, guiding you through the delicious world of beer and cheese matching. You will be able to sample a range of high quality, artisan cheeses, all with distinct flavours, aromas, textures and appearances, from James' celebrated Buckinghamshire delicatessen No2 Pound Street. These will be paired with generous pours of four different superb beers, specially selected by Des to pair with the cheeses. James is an award-winning cheese expert who has worked in some of the UK's most prestigious establishments. He travels the length and breadth of the UK to find, taste and bring back to the local area some of the finest artisan cheese the country has to offer. Des is an author of many beer-related books, including London's Best Beer, Pubs and Bars. His latest award-winning title, Cask, explains what makes live draught beer special, and explores its past, present and future. Both will be talking and answering questions about their careers and their adventures in their respective fields. This ticket includes admission to the beer and cheese event plus general festival admission, so you can enjoy the rest of the festival after it concludes.
