An Argyle Brewery later Birkenhead Brewery pub dating back to at least 1850 when it was listed in Bagshaw’s Directory as the Claughton Hotel. Later a Yates's Castle Brewery pub. The old photos show the pub in the 1950s and 1980s. Described in 1980 as a large post-war Whitbread pub typical of so many in the area, selling Whitbread Special Cask Bitter by handpump.
