Accredited for beer quality 2022
Large corner building situated in a prominent position at the centre of the town. With the arrival of the railway in the 1850s, the Crown (as it was then) became a local institution thanks to its proximity to the Station just down the hill. As a result the former Inn expanded into a Hotel, such was its dominance in the town that for many years after it was simply known as 'The Hotel'. It reverted to its public house status following a fire in 1968. The current pub spreads over the ground floor, with two main rooms, plus a large separate restaurant area; the latter has some unusual nooks for a more intimate gathering.
Reopened on 15/3/24 after a two year closure, this is very much a pub despite the sign by the entrance suggesting it is a restaurant. The public bar has a dart board, pool table and TV.
At present, the food offering is Indian dishes served in the evening only.
The premises was neglected during its period of closure so there is still a bit of work to be done, particularly to the garden which is not yet in use.
Hours and food times and choice are likely to be extended in July 2024.
This Pub serves 2 changing beers and 1 regular beer.
