Historic Interest

A document of 1805 says that an earlier name of the Mendlesham Kings Head was the Half Moon. (from Neil Langridge) A report in the Ipswich Journal*** on 03 Jun in 1837 stated that Robert Koipe COBBOLD of the Eye Brewery was retiring from business & was looking to sell various Inns & Public Houses including the King's Head, Mendlesham. A report in the Ipswich Journal** on Oct-20 in 1883 when William Durrant was the landlord states that : "William Durrant had kept the Kings Head at Mendlesham for 16 years & had not been the worse for drink during the last 8 years. He was arrested & charged with being drunk & disorderly upon the highway. A witness saw Durrant strike a young lad called Keeble without the least provocation, "young Keeble was very badly used". Durrant was found guilty & fined £2 which included costs." Photographs of this pub and more historical information about it can be found at suffolk.camra.org.uk/pub/722
