Historic Interest
A hotel of this name was once located on Bent Hill. It was also listed in Undercliff rd (in 1922). A paperback book published in 1969, called "Inns of the Suffolk Coast" by Leonard P Thompson** contains the following extract: A licence for what was then called the Grand Hotel & Restaurant was granted in 1897 & Tollemache's Brewery purchased in March, the following year. The original Grand Hotel, formerly the Bent Hill Restaurant, was on Bent Hill, & extended by the acquisition of several houses in Undercliff Road. By 1910 it had become an hotel of 50 bedrooms, fitted with electric light & every convenience. It ceased to be a residential in the early 1950s & became renowned for the excellence, comfort & generally pleasing appointments of its bars. Councillor W Yetton Ward, who was proprietor, at that time, added a new chapter to the Grand's history by opening the luxurious Sea View Lounge in May, 1954. Over the years, the Sea View Lounge, Public Bar, Sports Bar, Cocktail Bar, Ballroom & Mermaid Room have enhanced the prestige of the town.
