Good Beer Guide

Ale House, Stroud

Improve This Listing

Converted into a pub in late November 2012 by a proprietor known previously for running Good Beer Guide pubs in East Anglia. It stands on the corner of John Street opposite the Cornhill Market, home to Stroud’s celebrated Saturday farmers’ market, in the semi-pedestrianised middle of the town centre.

Entrance is via a long hallway into the main bar which features a high counter with a white top and a brightly lit back bar showing off the wine and spirits selection. Equipped with 12 handpumps, of which one is dedicated to cider and the other to perry. High ceilings throughout - the one in the main bar is of glass panels to permit top lighting. Seating is a mix of scrubbed tables and upright backed chairs, sofas, pews and pouffes. Large open fire opposite the bar.

Live music Friday or Saturday, world-class jazz once a month on a Thursday. Fiendishly difficult quiz on Sunday set by the landlord - who also prepares the specialty home-made curries, chilli, sandwiches and other dishes. Disabled toilet in ground floor entrance corridor (ramped access to pub via a door to the side), Gents and Ladies up a steep flight of stairs. Dogs welcome, children tolerated. Previously Stroud CAMRA Pub of the Year for six years - an unprecedented run.

A restored bar billiards table is a welcome recent addition.

OPENING TIMES updated 16 February 2022 from A-board outside pub.

Historic Interest

Grade-II listed, built in 1837 for the Poor Law Guardians. The bar occupies the double-height top-lit former boardroom.
