The pub is known to have been used by smugglers such as the Hawkhurst, Cranbrook and Aldingtion Gangs that were active in the 19th century. The name originates from the fact that the villagers paid their taxes in the pub.
Totally refurbished in 2013, the pub has been converted into mainly a restaurant serving good quality food all day, but still has a separate drinking area and patio.
This Pub serves 1 changing beer and 1 regular beer.
