Well-hidden, charming village pub at the heart of this rural Staffordshire community. A number of small rooms around the central servery includes an intimate bar room and a quirky little space which was formerly the above-ground cellar. Solid fuel heating gives a rosy glow in winter. Various themed food events take place throughout the year including Tapas nights and Italian menus which are quick to sell out.

One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest

Listed status: II

A charming, tucked-away, brick-built (mainly 18th-century) pub. On the right, a small public bar retains its Victorian bar back and counter plus old bench seating. The bar on the left suffered alterations in the 1950s but old panelling survives. The small room further left contains what may be an old cell - there was once a courtroom upstairs. It also has half-panelling, parquet flooring and a 1950s fireplace. There have been various extensions and incorporations at the back, including the vaulted Old Cellar.

General information about historic pub interiors

Tucked away brick-built pub, mainly 18th century, with stables at the rear. On the right a small public bar retains its Victorian bar back with four narrow mirrored panels, Victorian counter and old bench seating but the fireplace has been replaced. The bar on the left retains old panelling and a short partition but in the 1950s the seating and fireplace were replaced, a partition lost and the bar counter could date from this time or later. A small room to the left has half panelling, parquet flooring, a fireplace from the 1950s and what may be an old cell as the pub did have a courtroom upstairs, now a bedroom. The dining room may have been a skittle alley and the games room at the rear with an old fireplace has been brought into use. In the 1950s a brick extension was added for the toilets which have terrazzo tiled floors and some glass blocks in the wall. Also at the back, the Old Cellar was brought into pub use in 2014 - it has a white painted vaulted brick ceiling with an access to the toilets punched through on the right hand side. Listing desc. says "the front room of the cross-wing has some re-set C17 panelling over the fireplace."
