Improve This Listing

Lovely 16th-century former coaching inn situated opposite the green, in the centre of a privately owned picture-postcard village that has often been used as a film location. The bar is mainly candlelit, with a welcoming atmosphere and a log fire in winter; it also has an interesting collection of horse racing memorabilia.

The food is seasonal and locally sourced, cooked to order and of the highest quality. The restaurant is separate and booking is advisable. Three ales (all from Moon Gazer at visit in July 2023) are available, with real cider in the summer.

Superb pub; not to be missed.

One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest

Listed status: II

An 18th century pub in an estate village. A large entrance lobby with old panelled dado leads to the former public bar, now a dining room. It has the same dado panelling, an old brick fireplace with curious old cupboards on each side and a counter which is more like a hatch with no dispensers - the handpumps are next to the old bar-back shelving. Left of the lobby is the current bar, once the lounge, with '2' on the door (unusually, on both sides), a pamment floor and an old brick fireplace; the brick bar dates only from 2006. A further room at the back brought into pub use has a 1950s fireplace and a bench.

General information about historic pub interiors

18th-century pub in an estate village with only one approach road. To the right of a large entrance lobby with an old panelled dado is the former public bar, now a dining room, with '1' on the door. It has an old panelled dado with the paint removed, an old wood surround and brick fireplace with a fine set of curious old cupboards, two on each side. The counter is more like a hatch with no dispensers - the handpumps being situated adjacent to the bar back shelving, which looks at least 50 years old. To the left of the entrance lobby is the current bar, formerly the lounge, with '2' on the door, a Norfolk pamment floor and old brick fireplace with a log fire. Up to the early 1970s it had a tiny quarter circle bar which was replaced by a larger wooden counter. In 2006 this was replaced by a modern brick bar. A further room at the rear brought into pub use has a 1950s tiled fireplace and a bench. Small conservatory at rear has another old bench.
