Improve This Listing

A large, extended one-roomed pub but one in which you can still distinguish the previous layout and indeed still retains some very interesting features such as a characterful bay window. The front half of the pub has some fantastic green tiling and mirrors, although the gas lighting has now been replaced by candles. As the pub thins out to the rear it leads to a heated and lighted garden.

In 2006, a fine mosaic by local artist Tessa Hunkin, appeared on the pub's side, looking to replicate the pub sign in a marvellous way. Tube - Russell Sq., Chancery Lane or Holborn.

Two star - A pub interior of very special national historic interest

Listed status: Not listed

A Victorian four-storey brick-built pub with wide entrance lobbies to left and right with colourful tiled floors and floor-to-ceiling tiling. The left-hand wall has floor to ceiling tiling including four large plain bevelled mirrors in wooden frames. The front bar retains its Victorian bar counter and back fitting which has a row of small mirrors along the top section and other mirrors below, and in the centre of the three-bay bar back is a pedimented doorway. The rear bar, now largely open to the front one, has a similar back fitting to that at the front: the original counter remains but has evidently been shortened. There are Victorian glazed panels over the doorway that sits between the two areas of the servery.

General information about historic pub interiors

A Victorian four-storey brick-built pub with wide entrance lobbies to left and right with colourful tiled floors and floor-to-ceiling tiling. The double entrance door on the left used to lead into what was a corridor to the rear bar as shown by the left-hand wall being tiled floor to ceiling and including four large bevelled mirrors in wooden frames, now with modern decorative transfers on the lower parts. The partition separating the corridor from the front bar has been lost some years ago. The front bar retains its Victorian bar counter and back fitting which has a row of small mirrors along the top section and other mirrors below. In the centre of the three-bay bar back is a pedimented doorway: fridges have replaced the lower shelves. Right of the entrance is a reused mantelpiece set against the wall. Ornate plaster ceiling.

The rear bar, now largely open to the front one, has a similar back fitting to that at the front: the original counter remains but has evidently been shortened. There are Victorian glazed panels over the doorway that sits between the two areas of the servery. The rear bar has two skylights with modern glass and the fireplace is a reproduction. Closed Sundays.
