Good Beer Guide

Fountain Inn, Gloucester

Improve This Listing

17th century inn on the site of an ale house, known to have existed in 1216. King William III is said to have ridden his horse up the outside stairs to show contempt for the Jacobites who met here. Today, a passage leads from Westgate Street into a courtyard that is ablaze with flowers in the summer. A large door opens into the Cathedral bar with panelled ceiling and carved stone fireplace. The Orange Room serves as an overflow area or a room for private functions. The inn regularly plays host to live music and participates in local music festivals. A popular live music venue.

Historic Interest

Retains some 16th century features but mostly rebuilt as a coffee house in late 17th century. More 18th century alterations and remodelled circa 1900. Grade II Listed. Historic England List UID: 1271932
