This Pub is Closed Long Term

Friendly, traditional village local with colourful window-boxes and planters on the tiny front terrace. Three rooms, configured round a central bar, comprise a public bar with wooden settles, a front room with a coal fire, and a comfortable back room with panoramic views of the countryside. There is a separate games room. This pub has a strong community feel, though all are made welcome.

One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest

Listed status: Not listed

Although much modified in the mid-to-late 1950s, this pub has now gained the charm and patina of what the motor trade likes to call an older restoration. The two front downstairs rooms and an old rear extension form the core and share an irregular quadrilateral servery which has picture window service to all bars. In the L-shaped top room on the right, the fixtures (as elsewhere) are not exactly of great quality, e.g. the Formica bar top, but such period features are becoming rare - likewise the sliding door to the small bar next door and, elsewhere, the tiled fireplaces, leatherette fixed seating and, in the back room, the counter with a copper top.

General information about historic pub interiors

Though clearly modified in the mid 20c the pub now has the charm and patina of what the motor trade would call an older restoration. The core of the two front downstairs rooms and an old rearward extension, built at an angle to same on a steep slope, now share an irregular quadrilateral central servery with picture window service to all bars. This pub is barely altered since the refitting in the mid to late 1950s, but the work would not be called ‘quality’. On the right is the L-shaped tap room with 1950s counter with Formica top, 50s fixed seating but the fireplace looks later.

Through a sliding door is another small bar with a classic 1950s tiled fireplace with a log fire, another 50s counter with bench seating which looks 50/60s. Off this is a pool room on a higher level that until the mid 60s was a separate cottage. At the rear of the pub is firstly the ‘little bar’ with another 1950s counter with a Formica top and then another small room which has a 1950s bar with copper top and a 1960s leatherette section attached to it. The leatherette fixed seating could be 50/60s. This little-changed drinkers pub has been run by Ron & Pauline Harris since 1979. uPVC windows have been fitted.
