Good Beer Guide

Hidden Tap, Botley (Botley Brewery)

Improve This Listing

Hours shown are June 2024, they will vary with season.

The premises started off as a microbrewery in 2012 and in 2017 the small room next door became available and this became 'The Hidden Tap' tap room. It really is hidden behind the right side of Botley Mills. The Hidden Tap is as utilitarian room, tastefully decorated and was once a gunsmith and a car spare parts supplier. Behind the bar the small stillage is a set of industrial racking with four casks of Botley Brewery's own beer and up to seven different ciders from a variety of suppliers. Bottled beers, plus home-made pickles and chutneys are also on sale. Ten bar stools allow customers to drink at the bar or from the sturdy shelves around the perimeter of the room.

Outside there are several picnic benches with sun canopies and when sunny additional tables are put on the wall that overlooks the River Hamble. In winter, log burning chimineas provide extra warmth. This is a good spot to watch wildlife and regular sightings of deer, otters and kingfishers are seen. During warmer months, kayakers often paddle up the river and if they want a drink, they can pull a rope to ring a bell and the order is then lowered in a wooden box.

Botley Brewery has four core beers, which are Citra Ass Down, HPA, Wildern Red and English IPA. Two seasonal beers are Barista Coffee Milk Stout and Black Barrel. A guest beer is often served as well.

Sausage rolls, burgers and pies are usually available Thursday through to Sunday evenings or until they run out. The bar is also open on Bank Holidays 12-11pm with food and live music. Themed food nights take place regularly, such as curry nights and beef casseroles using local produce.

Historic Interest

The Brewery is attached to the Grade II Listed Botley Flour Mill. Historic England list entry 1322641.
