11/12/21 - "On passing the Kings Head, I could not see any handpumps on the bar. The windows are clear, it was light inside and dark outside so a clear view of all of the bar." Hence assume no cask beer.
A basic, street-corner pub of a type once common but now increasingly under threat. Very much a locals' pub with friendly bar staff and no other pretensions. It has quite an impressive exterior with some old beer advertising signs indicating its once Courage ownership. The pub is long and thin with most of it extending down the side street (Monsell Rd.), the decor is pleasant enough being carpeted throughout and ample seating with a dart board at the far end. There's a large screen TV although it did not seem to feature Sky Sports. No evidence of food, customers seemed to be bringing in their own without any problem.
Re-built of red brick in 1905 with three-storeys and two-storey at rear. Three exterior doors indicates it was probably originally two separate bars and off sales between them but now all one narrow room.
Has an old panelled bar counter curved at each end with the front painted a deep red. Halfway along the bar counter curves and the left section is slightly further back. Modern pot shelf. There are two sections of bar back – on the right it is of three-bays half circle headed with mirrors and coving above, also painted a deep red. Half of lower shelving remains. On the other side of a dumb waiter on the left is a two bay and return section with mirrors and lower shelving intact. The room has dado panelling painted a deep red colour, fixed seating not old, a 1930s brick fireplace is blocked-up. Fielded panelling around the stairs up and down is all painted a deep red colour.
