Maids Head Hotel, Norwich

Improve This Listing

Historic hotel, with parts dating back to the 13th century. The traditional oak-panelled bar is cosy, with red leather seating and stocks three ales, two rotating from local breweries such as Woodforde's and Moon Gazer, and one permanent, known as Maids Head Ale.

There's also a pretty patio courtyard which is partially covered, and tables in front on the pavement with views across Tombland and of the Cathedral.

One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest

Listed status: II

The must-see here is the delightful two-doored, wood-panelled snug next to the main bar, It has a service hatch (usually kept open) with a part-glazed screen, an old fireplace with Delft tiles, bell pushes, a tiny old letter-box and fitted wall cabinets. The main bar has some inter-war fittings but the counter and bar back are recent. Seek out the Norwich Panorama by John Moray Smith.

General information about historic pub interiors

Dates from 16th century with major facade changes in the 20th century. Next to the main bar is a delightful two-doored, wood-panelled snug with a screened hatch for service with two sliding windows. It is intact but nearly always open. Other attractive features include an old fireplace with Delft tiles, three bell pushes, a tiny letter box and fitted cabinets in the wall The main bar has an old brick fireplace with wood surround and plentiful panelling and internal dimpled-glass windows; the counter however is new as is the mirrored bar back. The Oak Room suite has square wood panelled walls which look inter-war. The Norwich Panorama by John Moray Smith was previously at the Cock Tavern in King Street.
