Monkey Brewhouse, Lymington

167 Southampton Road, Lymington, SO41 9HA (Directions)
Improve This Listing

A jumble of interconnected buildings forms the satisfyingly incoherent external view of the 18th-century Toll House. Originally named the Crown, then known as the Monkey House due to the then landlord keeping monkeys and then later still named the Tollhouse from the Grade II Listed turnpike toll house in the garden.

A 2021 remodeling saw an extension added at the rear which houses the new brewery.

The elegant dining room/lounge has a high open beamed ceiling, wooden floors, wood-paneled walls, a fine fireplace, and comfortable seating, with further seating space in a raised area to the left which has vista windows to the brewing room. The bar has a low, beamed ceiling, and an open fire with bare brick surround.

The brewery can also be viewed from a large outside patio area that has plenty of seating. Additional seating is available in the grass area behind the recently renovated 18th-century toll house.

The pub serves a range of gastro pub style food, including burgers. Upstairs is accommodation in the form of three double en-suite bedrooms.

The real ale range is complemented by unfiltered keg beers also brewed on the premises including a Forest Lager. A range of international bottled and canned beers is also available.

Cask ales are brewed in-house - the new brewery started production in July 2021. Regular beers are Tollhouse, a 3.8% bitter and Sea Wall, a 4.2% pale ale, and third pump has a changing range. Tollhouse, and some of the occasional beers are fined, the remainder unfined and hence cloudy by design.
