Poachers, Gledrid

Despite the misleading address, this newly enlarged and refurbished pub/restaurant is actually in England. Its popularity owes much to its emphasis on dining and its strategic position as one of only four Shropshire pubs on the Llangollen Canal. However there is a bar area for those not wanting a meal. The core of the building is over 200 years old, it used to be a farmhouse.

Outside facilities are very much designed to take advantage of the canalside siting with spacious terracing giving a good canal view from some of the tables. There's also a few moorings right next to the pub.

Five prominent handpumps are on the bar, though only 2 tend to actually be in use at any one time.

For those interested in history, the Pontcysyllte UNESCO World Heritage Site starts at Bridge 19 just by the pub and then heads west towards Chirk and Llangollen. And just a footnote about Gledrid. It is derived from the Welsh "galed ryd" meaning "difficult ford", and is a reminder that hereabouts the national frontier is close by! Was once one of the 8 pubs owned by J Edwards & Sons brewery of Weston Rhyn - one of Shropshire's long lost breweries!
