Road outside was first laid down by the Romans back in 71 AD long before Hadrians Wall was built. Building origins reputedly date back to the 1190sy. There are many flagstones and beams plus much old stonework. Note the impressive large fireplaces. Popular with cyclists; Route 72 of the National Cycle Network runs alongside.
