Improve This Listing

The historic and picturesque Refreshment Rooms at The Old Railway Station is now a freehold public house and restaurant. Interestingly this pub dates back to approx. 1890, when the Railway station was still in operational use and lots of the original features are included within the original room layout with high ceilings and log fires still present and there is an added wooden patio to the side. The rooms arrangement allow a lounge at the left with the restaurant behind, with the other three public rooms all used as bar areas, with the one at the end being the games room. All rooms have historic pictures of either railways or inside the local coal mine.

Real Ales are only available in the Winter Period (usually September- October onward), because of a lack of sales in the Summer!

The original Cymmer Station building (opened 1885, closed 1970) is a single storey building of stone, unusual in that it also doubled as a refreshment room from the 1890s. The main bar has fittings from that time: a panelled bar counter (but the bar top is modern) and a five-bay mirrored bar back with a third bay. A door (has a figure '5' on it) for staff; on the right are two drawers with cupboards below them. The main bar has a dado of old panelling and a wood surround fireplace. On the mantelpiece is a photo, taken in the 1940s, in the bar.

There is a further mirrored bar back to the left of two bays with a row of drawers. It straddles an arch in the servery area between the main bar and a smaller bar to the left. The left hand bar has another panelled bar counter with a black Formica top. The fireplace was opened out in the 1990s and has a large plain mirror above, some old dado panelling but 1960s (?) fixed seating. Double doors lead to a dining room at the rear left constructed in the 1990s.

A further small room on the right has more dado panelling. and a metal surround fireplace. A gap leads to the far right pool room, again constructed in the 1990s, with modern dado.
