This former CAMRA Pub of the Region is popular with locals and retains its character, a full range of Rossendale Brewery Ales are available; the changing beer is usually Rossendale Citra. 30p a pint discount on real ale for card carrying CAMRA Members. The upstairs is a restaurant, including Cuban Tapas and vegetarian options. Food is also available in the pub Wednesday to Sunday. Sundays there is a traditional roast for £6 from noon until it's gone. Choice of food varies with the day and the time of day. This is a pub on the main road and close to Hyde United football ground. The rear patio includes a covered and heated smoking area. Closed Tuesdays in Winter.

The Sportsman retains many Victorian fittings including tiling in the passage and up the staircase. There has been much opening up but something of the traditional layout is apparent. The servery is right of the corridor and the original counter has a Formica (1950/1960s?) top. The left-hand rooms have Victorian fireplaces and fixed seating with bell-pushes, but both now have wide openings and the top section of walling between them has been removed. Upstairs is a rare intact former billiard room complete with extensive bench seating and a barrel vaulted ceiling: the full-size table was removed in 2011. The toilets retain inter-war fittings. Much inter-war etched and frosted glazing.
Retains a lot of Victorian fittings including tiling in browns and cream with tiled panels on the dado of the passage from the front door to the rear and up the staircase. Downstairs there has been a great deal of opening up but something of the original early 20th century can be easily worked out â the servery is right of the central tiled corridor and there are two former separate rooms (left). The original bar counter in the passageway has a Formica top - in the vault it has new panels added as do the walls.
Two two rooms on the left of the passage have Victorian fixed seating with bell-pushes all around them and Victorian fireplaces but both have wide arch openings and the top section of the wall between them has been removed 'for supervision'. Up the tiled staircase, is a rare intact former billiard room complete with bench seating around most of the room and a barrel vaulted ceiling but the full sized snooker table was removed in 2011. The toilets retains their interwar fittings - tiled walls in the gents'; also lots of inter-war etched and frosted windows.
