This historic Gray's hotel (which dates back to 1392), underwent an extensive refurbishment in 2017. The emphasis is now on fine dining, with steaks the main feature on the menu. Drinkers are also catered for, with a number of tables available close to the bar. A separate function hall (the Cygnet Room) is available for hire. There are seven bedrooms available.

The Swan is the second oldest building in Maldon (after the Blue Boar) with sections of it dating back to 1392.

Judging for the competition takes around a year, starting with individual nominations from CAMRA members and tasting panel nominations, leading to a series of rigorous regional heats adhering to a strict blind tasting policy.
