Having been closed for several years it reopened in Sept 2019 as a community owned pub after a full refurbishment. It is thought to have been built around 1860 and would probably have quenched the thirst of colliers working at the nearby pit, although the famous local ironworks was already in decline by this time. It was orginally built as a blacksmiths shop and became a pub when the two brothers who owned it had a disagreement and one went off to set up his own rival business. Coincidentally this also became a pub (The Farmers Arms) but this is sadly closed. Photos of local scenes can be seen on the walls.
