Good Beer Guide

Tichborne Arms, Tichborne

Improve This Listing

Thatched country pub built in 1939, with substantial renovation in 2022, but the site has had a pub since 1487; the 1939 build replaced a pub destroyed by fire. At the front is a large contemporary room partly wood panelled with matching bar, open fire and piano. The bar serves mainly local ales on 3 handpumps and sometimes an additional one direct from the cask. Card payment only.

At the back is an impressive conversion of a previous patio area and outbuilding (housing the toilets) to a large dining room including a long bench seat and shelves displaying a range of antique kitchen items. A continually changing menu features home-cooked locally sourced seasonal food. Booking is recommended if you intend to dine.

Outside is a large decorative garden with lots of benches, a canopy covered, glass panelled patio area which is occasionally used to show live sport on a large screen, a children's play area and a petanque pitch . During summer a pizza oven and outside bar are are in use in the garden area.

The village is famous for the Tichborne Dole - a traditional festival, where donations of flour are handed out from the front of Tichborne House.

Historic Interest

The site has had a pub since 1487, but has been rebuilt several times. Current pub was built in 1939

Thatched pub of brick rebuilt in 1939 which is little changed and has retained some original features. The original bar on the right has a bare wood floor and walls that look panelled but are in fact wood effect plaster! The original stone fireplace remains but with a modern log burner. The bar counter looks more modern and may have replaced a hatch? The present main bar on the left has a bare wood floor and was increased in size in the 1970s when former living quarters on the far left were amalgamated. The dado around the whole room, which must date from the 1970s, matches the bar counter front so it looks like it is also from that date. The bar back consists of a stillage of casks with shelving above and below some of which looks modern. It still retains outside gents and ladies little changed.
