Built in 1902, this is a genuine local corner pub offering fine beers and food, and hosting live music on Friday. A few minutes' walk from St Margarets railway station and it's a popular meeting place for rugby fans on international weekends. The Bearcat Comedy Club has been inviting top comedians to the function room every Saturday night for more than 20 years. The smoking area outside is heated. Comprehensive food menu. Currently the garden is being transformed so that barbecues and hog roasts can make regular appearances. The pub is famed for being used for a scene in the Beatles film “A Hard Day’s Night” where Ringo played darts.

One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest

Listed status: Not listed

Built in 1902, this Edwardian pub retains some original features from that time.

Probably built by TH Nowell Parr for Fullers Brewery, on the exterior there are stone carved heads at the top of windows on the left, and a frieze above a bay window on the right.

Now open plan it retains the original panelled bar counter painted a gastro blue-grey colour but the bar top looks like a recent addition as does the bar-back fitting. Some walls have original fielded panelling to half-height, while those beneath windows are panelled on the dado. On the far left is a trademark Nowell Parr Tudor-style wooden arch framing a window, and in the centre of the pub is another wide Tudor-style arch that separates to some extent the main bar. On the left the windows have delightful green and yellow banded windows.

On the far right is a lobby with floor to ceiling glazed brick – dark brown on the dado and cream above. The external door here has a circular ‘Private’ etched glass panel, while the left hand door of the lobby has a ‘Saloon Lounge’ circular panel. At the rear right is the Dovecote  Room, which is a later addition, but the remains of the old dovecote can be seen on the wall above the entrance.

General information about historic pub interiors

Imposing corner pub built in 1902 (by TH Nowell Parr for Fullers Brewery?) of red brick with a brown tiled dado and corner turret. Note the stone carved heads at the top of windows on the St Margarets Grove side and frieze above a bay window on the Winchester Road side now picked out in gold.

Now open plan it retains the original panelled bar counter recently painted a gastro blue-grey colour but the bar top looks like a recent addition as does the bar back fitting. The walls of the whole pub have original fielded panelling to two-thirds height. On the left is a trademark TH Nowell Parr wide arch, Victorian reproduction fireplace and bare wood floor. Lots of stained glass windows throughout and some original doors.

On the far right on the Winchester Road side is a lobby with floor to ceiling glazed brick – dark brown on the dado and cream above. The door here has a circular ‘Private’ Edwardian deep etched glass panels. The left hand door of the lobby has a ‘Saloon Lounge’ circular panel. At the north end of the building is the Winchester Room, which looks like a later addition with an old wood floor and stage but the bar looks like a recent addition.
