Good Beer Guide

Wheelwrights Arms, St Nicholas Hurst

Improve This Listing

This vibrant village pub was once an 18th-century wheelwright's shop and has two interconnected bars serving up to six Wadworth beers, containing two guests from the Wadworth list and one or two real Ciders (sometimes a perry). Three 1/3 pint padclles available. It is run by Daryl and Katey (previously ran the Fox and Hounds, Theale) and serves well kept beer and cider and quality home-cooked food. The pub is usually quiet at lunchtimes but early evening is often full and lively. Newspapers are provided in the larger front bar where the log-burner is set into the old fire-place, the eclectic mix of furniture and low beams create an old-world atmosphere. The smaller bar where the beers are dispensed and all main meals are ordered can be noisy, the confluence of all that goes on in a busy pub. The dining room which was extended in 2016, is light and airy with windows on three sides. Families are welcome, children until 8.30 pm, with children's portions available from the main menu. There is ample outdoor seating, some covered and heated. A popular pub with locals, dogs very welcome except in the dining area.

If the dining area is fully booked, food can be served at the tables in the bars. These are only set as dining tables if pre-booked. The extended dining area now caters for up to 55 people, the bars for another 36 or so people.
