We reported in the September bulletin that The White Swan, which had been closed for two years, was re-opened by well respected landlord Nigel Barker following an extensive refurbishment. This was on an initial one year lease from owners Seven Capital, with the intention of extending. Now the freehold is on the market for £650,000. See: Birmingham Live . North West Wales, DOUGLAS ARMS HOTEL, Bethesda. Built c 1820 to serve Thomas Telford’s new road from Holyhead to London. It has been owned by the Davies family since 1913, and little has changed since the 1930s. Now the Douglas Arms Hotel is up for sale with an asking price of £470,000. See: North Wales Live . |
Lancashire, YE HORNS INN, Goosnargh. Shut for two years, Ye Horn’s Inn re-opened on 28th April. The pub has been subjected to an extensive contemporary makeover and it appears that damaging changes have been made to this listed pub without planning permission. Pub Heritage Group reported this to planning enforcement in December, which they are investigating. See: Lancashire Telegraph. |
Edinburgh & the Lothians, KENILWORTH, Edinburgh. Mick Slaughter reports that the grade A listed Kenilworth, with an interior from 1899 designed by architect Thomas Purves Marwick and one of four Edinburgh pubs with an historic island bar, has re-opened. Greater London, ARGYLL ARMS, Soho. Also owned by Nicholson’s, the Argyll Arms, just off Oxford Street, temporarily closed for refurbishment on 10th April. The grade II* pub is remarkable for the survival of its glazed screenwork, which dates from 1895. |
Greater Manchester, SHAKESPEARE, Farnworth. The freehold of the Shakespeare has been put up for sale by Admiral Taverns for £325,000. See: Everard Cole. The pub was built in 1926 by Bolton brewers Magee Marshall and has remained largely unchanged since. The pub closed on April 7th. Thanks to Jonathan Bracken for this news. |
