Pub Heritage Bulletin 256 Jun 2024

Release date: June 29, 2024

Three Star Heritage Pubs

Merseyside, VINES, Liverpool. The winners of the annual CAMRA Pub Design Awards were revealed in the opulent surroundings of the magnificent Vines on the 19th June. The grade II* Vines has been awarded the prestigious Historic England Conservation award for the high-quality restoration work undertaken by the 1936 Pub Company, who took over the lease in early 2023. The Vines was built in 1907 in a flamboyant baroque style and is one of the country’s great show pubs. After years of neglect, it really does look fabulous. Congratulations to all involved. For a full run down of all this year’s winners See: CAMRA.

Worcestershire, PAUL PRY, Worcester. Following the sudden death of landlord Alex Pope in January this year, the Pope family have made the hard decision to sell the pub. The Pope family took on the lease of the pub in 2017 and then bought the freehold in 2022. They are committed to finding a suitable buyer and the pub remains open until then. It is being marketed by Sidney Phillips with an asking price of £495,000.

Greater Manchester, BRITONS PROTECTION, Manchester. The legal battle between licensee Allan Hudd and Star Pubs & Bars (Heineken) was last covered in the March bulletin. Star want to take the pub into their managed portfolio and the hearing was due to be concluded during the week of 17th June. This has now been deferred due to a ‘technical point of procedure’ See: Manchester Evening News. Allan sees this as a small victory as at least they can continue to run the pub for the immediate future.

Northumberland, STAR INN, Netherton. We learn with great sadness, that Vera Wilson-Morton, the ‘legendary’ landlady and owner of this remarkable old pub passed away late last month at the age of 91. The Star itself has been closed for well over a year due to Vera’s failing health, and nothing is presently known about its likely future. Thanks to Dave Gamston for this news.

Two Star Heritage Pubs

Greater Manchester, QUEENS ARMS, Patricroft. Mark Charnley reports that the Queens Arms, built in 1828 with a mainly late Victorian interior, is up for sale with Savills with an asking price of £150,000. See: Savills. After the licensee retired after 31 years, owners Punch Taverns decided to put the pub on the market. Mark says that there is local interest in getting the now expired ACV renewed.

West Wales, CRESSELLY ARMS, Cresswell Quay. The Cresselly Arms has been awarded CAMRA’s Wales pub of the year, after winning Pembroke CAMRA’s branch pub of the year earlier in the year. The delightful riverside pub with its simple unspoilt Victorian interior was run by the same family for nearly 100 years until 1981. Congratulations to current landlord Steve Adams and all at the Cresselly Arms. Thanks to Andy Shaw for this news.

One Star Heritage Pubs

Greater London North West, MASONS ARMS, Harlesden. The Masons Arms shut suddenly on May 28th and has been put on the market through agents AG&G with an asking price of £1,750,000. Although the pub has been opened up it still retains plenty of late Victorian fittings including a magnificent bar back. See: Right Move.

Borders, TOWER HOTEL, Oxton. The Tower Hotel, built in 1903, reopened in June following a refurbishment, having been shut for five years. It survived a planning application in 2020 to turn it in to offices and was sold to new owners a year later. The room of interest here is the public bar, and following a recent visit Paul Ainsworth reports the good news that the historic features in the bar have been retained.

Essex, TOWER ARMS, South Weald. Built in 1704 The Tower Arms has been a pub since 1921 and retains fittings from that period. It has been shut since 2014 and the news is that it is due to reopen soon. Unfortunately, the planned refurbishment, which has planning permission, includes the removal of all the 20th Century fittings. Thanks to Tim Harvill for this news.

Gloucestershire, BERKELEY ARMS, Purton. We last reported on this greatly missed National Inventory pub in March 2022 when Historic England decided not to list the pub after an application by the Pub Heritage Group. This was not surprising as the owners, Berkeley Castle Estates, tragically ripped out the bar and bar back prior to Historic England’s visit! We now hear that they are intending to re-open it as a pub – but obviously its inventory credentials are greatly diminished. Thanks to Paul Ainsworth for the update.

Four new additions to the Inventory at One Star:

Edinburgh & The Lothians, DEAN TAVERN, Newtongrange. The Dean Tavern was rebuilt in 1910 and is one of only five pubs in Scotland still operating on the ‘Gothenburg’ system. The Gothenburg System originated in Sweden in 1865 as a means of encouraging temperance where the managers gained no profit from alcohol sales but only from food and non-alcoholic drinks. Profits above a certain level were then used to fund projects benefitting the community. The other inventory pub operating the Gothenburg system is the Prestoungrange Gothenburg (Three Star) in Prestonpans. The Dean Tavern is included for its multi-room layout with much remaining from a 1962 refurbishment. Of note is the impressive arched public bar which has been carefully modernised over the years.

Greater London South West, LATCHMERE, Battersea. The Latchmere is a long-standing theatre pub (the theatre being on the first floor). The large L-shaped bar on the ground floor has an early 20th Century bar counter and back, along with other fittings from this period.
