For 200 years, until 1974, this was known as the Shoulder of Mutton. The stone blocks of which it's constructed are angled to throw off the water; there's also an unusual iron ring on the wall where you can tie up your dog. Rebuilt by Jack Brook, who gave the pub its new name, it's now a cosy single-roomed local with a stone vaulted ante-chamber. Always offering a friendly welcome, it's popular with families and can get quite lively in the evening when the younger people arrive.
