Friendly country pub with few frills and an old fashioned atmosphere; the licensee has been in situ for over half a century. The small cosy bar, with low ceiling and real fire, has now been defined by Camra's Pub Heritage Committee as being of "outstanding national historic interest" due to "some fixed seating of pre-war origin, 1950s counter, and old service hatch to former corridor". Landlady also runs neighbouring caravan site and stables. Occasional guest beer in summer. Friday happy hours between five pm and seven pm. Cash only.

One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest

Listed status: Not listed

Of interest for the right-hand tap room only - which has some fixed seating of pre-war origin, 1950s counter, and old service hatch to former corridor. The main body of the pub is a post-war amalgamation of the former corridor and left-hand lounge into an amorphous opened-up space.

General information about historic pub interiors

.

19th century pub which was last re-arranged in 1955 when the present owners took over the pub - it is unchanged since that date.

Prior to 1955 the layout was a separate Tap Room on the right with no servery - beer fetched from the cellar and served from a jug; lounge on the left; and a passage between them from the front door to the rear. The layout now is a Tap Room on the right; passage from front door to rear with a hatch / doorway on the right at the end; lounge bar on the left which was opened-up to the passage in 1955.

In the Tap Room the bar counter was added c.1955 and is of a distinctive 1950s style having a horizontal panelled front. Bar back of shelves added in c.1955. Dado panelling is pre-WWII with benches attached. Panelled ceiling. Copper topped tables from c.1960. Tiled fireplace of 1950s or earlier. In the now opened-up lounge is a large stone fireplace reaching the ceiling with a copper hood often seen in c.1960 refitting. 1950s dado panelling with benches attached. Panelled ceiling. The pubs keeps traditional opening hours of 12 to 3 and 7 to close.

The pub survives due to the camping and caravan site that is part of the business and operates from 1st March to 31st Oct each year. Tents, Caravans, Motorhomes, small Campervans are accepted but there are no electric hookups. Dogs are welcome. Toilets and showers are available onsite.
