Stroud Hotel, Stroud

Reopened 15th December 2023 after being closed since May 2020. Recently benefitted from tasteful extensive refurbishment

A 300-year old coaching inn with many period features and the usual hotel facilities, the Stroud is already getting a good reputation for its food.

The Bar entrance is on Station Rd close to the A&A Taxi office from where you enter into a well-lit bar area with the actual bar extending in front of you down the left side wall. Beyond the bar to the rear there is seating area in front of the food servery. To you right there are tables in front of airy windows and more seating areas to the centre of the room.

Décor is tasteful with naked brickwork, wood panelling (distressed below the bar) stripped pine boarded floor and period Edison style lighting. Electrical cabling is routed on the surface inside industrial galvanised conduit and heating provide by Victorian style cast iron radiators. Artwork is present to provoke the mind and antique pieces such as stoneware vessels add to the ambience, all in all a pleasant place to be.

The floor plan is complex with several areas off the bar area. The “Last Stop”, the “Snug”, The restaurant and an intimate dining area for 6 or so. There is also a door through to the hotel entrance lobby where the toilets may be found up the stairs.

The Last Stop is on the corner of the building with an emergency exit and the sheer amount of glass makes it very light and airy though in summer the sun may make it hot. Outside one aspect is the patio/garden area.

The Snug is next along and as the name suggest it has a more intimate feel about it. Only two windows are present affording a view to the patio/garden area to the rear but shutters are provisioned to close this out.

Next along is the restaurant which is oblong shapes with tables arranged around a very long double-sided fixed bench seat in the centre again windows are present on two aspects, the patio/garden area to the rear and the hotel entrance lobby. Shutters again can provide some privacy.

The other side of the hotel entrance lobby is the function room which is of reasonable size and rectangular in shape. With windows to the rear, shutters again for privacy if required. The wall at the far end is mirrored to give a greater feeling of space.

It is good to see this classic building brought back into use and we wish the enterprise good fortune.
